Am 9. Oktober 2019, dem höchsten jüdischen Feiertag Jom Kippur, versuchte ein schwerbewaffneter Rechtsextremer, in die Synagoge in Halle einzudringen. Sein Ziel: Die 52 dort anwesenden Personen zu ermorden. Nach mehreren missglückten Versuchen, sich Zutritt zu verschaffen, fuhr er zum nahegelegenen Imbiss „Kiez-Döner“. Zwei Menschen kamen ums Leben, mehrere weitere wurden schwer verletzt und traumatisiert. Am 21. Juli 2020 begann der Gerichtsprozess gegen den Attentäter vor dem Oberlandesgericht Naumburg.
